First grade is a year of developing those skills learned in kindergarten, not just with technology. This can be a profound year of learning for students as they gain confidence in their abilities and are exposed to a variety of engaging ways to learn. Technology at this stage should begin to advance from teacher-led to students becoming independent. While new technology and apps will need several attempts before independence, it is our hope that students will be able to utilize these tools to create their own work.
Visuals: The camera on the iPad can be one of the most powerful tools that a student can possess. Being able to capture what they see allows them to share and reflect on a different level. Consider using the camera to allow your students to make visuals with tools like PicCollage.
Seesaw: Turning in work is great, but take it a step further by having students use metacognition as well as develop artifacts of learning. Students in first grade can do more annotating in Seesaw through the use of drawing tools, audio, as well as text.
Image searching: Kids are curious, but searching for information online can be very difficult, especially since they are not fluent readers. However, images are easily accessible to students. Exploring different types of animals? Instead of showing students a picture, have them search and discover!
